Melaka to send volunteers to Turkey - Exco

MELAKA - The Melaka government will send a medical team, together with volunteers from non-governmental organisations (NGOs), for a humanitarian mission to help earthquake victims in Turkiye.

State Health and Anti-Drug Committee chairman Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said that the number of volunteers participating in the mission will be decided tomorrow, and are expected to leave for Turkiye next week.

"Alhamdulillah, in addition to that, a humanitarian fund for earthquake victims in Turkiye will also be launched by the state government in a few days and has been approved in today's exco meeting.

"May Allah facilitate us in assisting our brothers and sisters who are being tested in Turkiye," he said in a statement here today.

A strong earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, which hit Turkiye and Syria on Feb 6, claimed thousands of lives.

Turkiye on Feb 7 declared a three-month state of emergency in 10 provinces, namely Adana, Adıyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and Sanliurfa, to ensure that the search and rescue mission runs smoothly.
