Umno reps should support Anwar for the sake of Malay welfare, says Khir Toyo
MOHD FAIZUL HAIKA MAT KHAZISHAH ALAM - Umno MPs should support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim till the end of the 15th Parliament term to ensure political stability and a smooth economic recovery.
Former Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo said even though Umno was uncomfortable with DAP in the unity government they are forced to support Anwar's leadership to ensure the fate and welfare of Malays.
Khir said the economy will collapse along with the country's political situation if there were Umno representatives or other parties in the government that attempted to topple Anwar's government by establishing a backdoor government.
"Umno can cooperate with all parties in the government including DAP on the conditions that they are not too extreme.
"We hope DAP will take strict action on Penang Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P Ramasamy for releasing the statement that struck the hearts and emotions of Malays," he told Sinar.
He said such when commenting on whether all Umno representatives will support Anwar as prime minister to the end of term as ordered by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah in a royal address in Parliament.
Khir said all BN and Umno representatives must play an effective role to point out any mistakes within the government.
The former Sungai Panjang Assemblyman stated Umno's struggle to defend the fate and welfare of Malays must be clearly seen to bring back the public's confidence as state elections draws near.
"If Umno fails to do so we will disappear forever after the state elections.
"What's important now is for all Umno representatives to continue their struggles for religion, raceand the country.
"Umno can't run from this struggle because we are not only supported by three million Umno members but also a majority of public especially Malays in the country," he said.
He said Umno must be smart in playing a role if if they want to remain relevant.
Umno Veteran Datuk Mustapha Yaakub said he was confident the party will stand behind Anwar through thick and thin until the next general elections.
Mustapha said all Umno and BN MPs will not take part in any moves to topple Anwar or to establish a backdoor government as reportedly planned by certain parties.
"I see a major possibility there would be a move to topple Anwar as prime minister by the opposition MPs but not by Umno representatives who are part of the unity government," he said.
He stated all Umno and BN MPs as well as the government component parties must focus on aiding Anwar to speed up the economic recovery process, stabilising prices of goods and overcoming the cost-of-living issue.
"We hope there will no longer be any stories of dissatisfaction, efforts to overthrow the government and racist statements issued by certain leaders from the government component parties," he said.
Ramasamy previously urged the unity government under Anwar to reform the public service sector for it to no longer be dominated by the Malays.
The statement brough several criticisms from both government and opposition parties and Anwar had stated his government will not follow Ramasamy's recommendations.
