'Road tax cannot be abolished as it is a source of national income' - Loke

KUALA LUMPUR - Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook says the government will not do away with road tax abolishment as it collects RM4 billion each year in revenue, representing one of its main source of income.

"The road tax is part of the government's income, if it was exempted the government will have no income for its administration.

“We must understand any country and government requires tax revenue," he said.

This comes after comments from citizens urging for the road tax to be abolished.

Starting on Friday, individuals will no longer have to display their motor vehicle license (road tax) and will rely on a digital display instead.

Loke said individuals can register their accounts through the JPJ portal or through the MyJPJ application on the App Store, Play Store and Huawei App Gallery.

“However, those who wish to continue displaying their road tax can do so.

“I know some have said this is a hassle," referring to those without internet services in rural areas.

Loke said the digital road tax was not mandatory and the traditional display was allowed.
