Op Starlight: MAF deploys team to set up field hospital in Turkey

SHAH ALAM - The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) has started deploying a team for its mission to set up a field hospital in Turkey today to help reduce the burden faced by the victims of the recent earthquake.

MAF chief General Tan Sri Affendi Buang in his speech during the launch of the operation dubbed “Op Starlight” said the humanitarian mission involved ATM’s medical officers and personnel who will be extending assistance following the disaster.

He noted that there were about 15,000 fatalities as a result of the earthquake that jolted Turkey and there were countless victims who have yet to be rescued.

Affendi expressed his trust and belief in the officers and personnel chosen for the mission.

"There is no denying that the situation there is a bit chaotic and can be volatile, however, I am confident that with the wisdom and experience of all of you who are mature enough, that you will be able to handle such a situation,” he said.

He said it was important for the team deployed for the mission to remain focus and be prepared physically and mentally in carrying out their duty for the sake of the victims.

“Prove your competence and professionalism as a soldier, as a doctor, as a medical officer, and at the same time, you are also carrying Malaysia’s name, which must be guarded on each other's shoulders,” he added.

On Feb 7, Malaysia deployed its Special Malaysian Search and Rescue Team (Smart) to provide medical assistance and health services to the country.

The team of the search and rescue (SAR) mission was made up of members of the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) and the Civil Defence Force (APM).

On Monday, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit the Pazarcik district in the Kahrananmaras region and shook several other regions, including Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay and Kilis.
