SHAH ALAM - The Syria Care Organisation in collaboration with Sinar Karangkraf aims to raise funds totaling up to RM500,000 to be donated to the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.

Its chief executive officer, Siti Sakinah Meor Omar Baki said the donations will be used to distribute immediate assistance, such as food and other necessities for the winter season.

"The aid will focus primarily on Syria, as the situation there is very critical. Currently, a majority of aid were directed towards Turkey compared to Syria even though the situation was far worse.

"Facilities for the search and rescue operations in Syria were also lacking, the donations will also serve as preparations for machinery to improve operations," she said when contacted by Sinar Harian on Wed.

On Mon, A magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit Turkey and Syria, causing thousands of deaths and injuries.

The earthquake was also felt in Cyprus and Lebanon.

Siti Sakinah said Syria Care is working towards better housing for refugee victims in the country.

"The current refugee camps were still lacking, with some families living in tents. Through this donation drive, it will serve as a new start for us to build a conductive home for them," she explained.
