JOHOR BARU - Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad has confirmed that he will not contest the coming party elections including the Johor Bahru Umno division chief post which he currently holds.

Johor Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin confirmed Shahrir's stand after chairing Johor Umno special meeting at the Umno building here today.

He said Johor Umno respects Shahrir's decision to not defend the position he has held for 40 years.

"He will no longer be in Johor Umno liaison committee after this. We express our gratitude and appreciation for his contributions to Johor Umno," Khalid said in a press conference after the special meeting today.

Shahrir explained, when met by reporters, that he came to the decision in order to focus on personal affairs.

"This decision allows me to just be 'Shahrir' again. I am not sure if I will still be active on social media (Tok Uban Facebook)," he said.

He stressed that the decision was not influenced by a court case case he had faced.

On Jan 5, Shahrir, who was also Felda chairman, was acquitted by Kuala Lumpur High Court on charge of failing to declare RM1 million he received from Datuk Seri Najib tun Razak to the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).
