KUALA LUMPUR - Suspended Umno Deputy Youth Chief Shahril Hamdan believes the purported cleansing of the party will not stop internal rift, as other challenges await.

Speaking on whether the Umno cleanse would have an effect on state elections, Shahril said it will all depend on the Umno leadership and the narratives they draw on the matter.

“It might be necessary for them to spin it as we (members who were suspended and sacked) are all evil, anti-Umno people, leaders to be kept out of the party, maybe it will have a negative impact if they feel they have a narrative out," Shahril told Sinar Daily's Politically Frank.

He also stated that this Umno cleanse will never stop the internal politics of the party.

“The internal politics will be there, now the voices of the dissenters have been purged from the party. I guess the headache that we have faced will be present in the same form but some other challenges will occur.”

Speaking on next move after being suspended from Umno, Shahril said he would take some time off and was in no rush.

“I’m just meeting with people and friends across the political spectrum.”

Shahril was among the 42 Umno members who were suspended for six years after the Umno supreme council meeting on Jan 27.
