SHAH ALAM - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed the appointment of his eldest daughter Nurul Izzah as his senior advisor on economic and finance but stated she wasn't paid any allowance.

"I want to clarify that I invited Nurul Izzah to help as an advisor at the Prime Minister's Office and the Finance Ministry.

"I'm not paying her any allowance at both offices," he told a press conference after opening the Tambun Parliamentary Constituency Service Center in Meru, here, today.

Anwar's comments were following Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu's cynical tweet congratulating Nurul Izzah on her new position.

In his tweet, Ahmad Faizal said: "The PM's eldest daughter, Nurul Izzah was appointed Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister on economics and finance.

"Apparently, according to her, Papa, who is also finance minister, appointed her effective Jan 3, 2023. Congratulations!" he said cynically.

The Tambun parliamentarian said Ahmad Faizal has the right to ask about the appointment.

"But I wanted to ask the Bersatu leader very important questions about issues involving land theft, logging activities, shares, and commissions.

"He is destroying the country, yet I have never seen their statement on efforts to cleanse the country of these activities. Everyone talks about corruption, but when talking about this case, they ask why we need to dig up old stories," he said.

When asked about Nurul Izzah holding such a position without proper credentials, Anwar said even he did not have any financial training despite having previously held the portfolio for eight years.

"Ministers from Perikatan Nasional, Bersatu, and Pas also lack the necessary qualifications. When we raise the issue, we must be consistent. So, must the health minister be a doctor or the water minister be an engineer? It never happens like that.

Izzah, however, has two degrees, one in public policy (politics, economy, and social) from one of the finest universities in the United States, Johns Hopkins University, and the other in engineering, Anwar said.

Earlier today, PKR vice president and former Permatang Pauh member of parliament Nurul Izzah revealed her appointment to The Star in an exclusive interview and said it took effect on Jan 3.
