SHAH ALAM - Voters at east coast are likely to vote for Pas despite slow economic development in the state, say analysts.

International Islamic University political analyst Dr Syaza Shukri said locals in the two states prioritise local identity over economic development.

“They are more concerned with local identity than talks on development as seen in the Klang Valley. Protection of the culture and way of life is more important,” she told Sinar Daily.

Moreover, Dr Syaza added that political parties other than Pas need to be in the states for many years to understand the locals, adding that Umno may have a better chance than PKR.

“But their tarnished image (over corruption) has affected their standing,” she added.

The locals in Terengganu and Kelantan want development but it was not their priority at the moment.

“They want a holistic development and to include social development based on Islam and Malay identity,” she said.

Meanwhile, political analyst Dr Oh Ei Sun said Umno won Terengganu for a few terms but may have a hard time winning back the state after it went back to Pas.

“As there is a rise of the so-called green wave in recent months, it would appear that at least in this round it would be very difficult for even Umno to win.

“PKR which seems to be liberal and secular has virtually no chance in either state,” he said.

Furthermore, Dr Oh also said: "their notion of development has a much greater spiritual meaning than socio economic dimension".

Political analyst, Mujibu Abd Muis said there is a sense of spiritual attachment within voters in Kelantan and Terengganu and due to that they vote for Pas.

State elections in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Pulau Pinang are suppose to be held this year.
