KOTA KINABALU - A man stranded at sea for 14 hours was forced to eat live squid to survive.

Al Sipal Abdullah, 31 was stranded between Manggalum Island and Gaya Island, here, on Tuesday before he was rescued by a ship's crew around 11.30pm.

He had drifed off at 10.30am.

Sipal went fishing with his friends at 4am using their own boats. However, Al Sipal's boat was found capsized and the victim was not in its vicinity.

His cousin Sahidjuan Abdul Rahim, 37 said they immediately lodged a police report at Alam Mesra Police Station.

“The weather conditions were less than ideal at the time making it difficult for a search and rescue mission to be done but we received information that Sipal was successfully saved by a crewmate near Sepanggar,” he said when contacted by Sinar, today.

Sahidjuan said Sipal is still weak and recovering at his home in Tuaran.

When asked how Sipal could remain in sea for 14 hours, Sahidjuan said: "His cousin was forced to eat live squid and swam with the currents."

"And luckily he ate squids to keep him alive."
