BANGKOK - Thailand's battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations skyrocketed by 458.33 per cent from a year earlier to 2,680 units in December 2022, boosted by the government's supportive policy, reported Xinhua citing data Tuesday.

The new registrations were mainly BEV passenger cars and motorcycles, which saw a year-on-year increase of 820 per cent and 266.22 per cent, respectively, according to data from the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

In 2022, the BEV registration totalled 20,815, up 274.64 per cent from one year earlier, with passenger cars recording a 395.78-per cent rise to 9,643 units, according to the FTI.

The strong growth came amid the Thai government's efforts to build Thailand into an electric vehicle (EV) production hub and make EVs account for 30 per cent of its total auto production by 2030.

To encourage the use of EVs, the government unveiled supportive schemes last year, including subsidies for vehicle purchases and tax incentives for EV imports. - Bernama
