SHAH ALAM - The Energy Commission (ST) has reminded the public going back to their hometowns during the Chinese New Year festive season to be mindful of electricity and gas safety.

The public is reminded to not take electricity and gas safety measures lightly.

The Energy Commission would like to remind the public to use electrical appliances and decorative lights that come with the ST-SIRIM safety label.

"Please use electrical appliances that are in good condition and is not damaged.



"Do not overload the socket with excessive appliances and do not press the electrical switch with wet hands "Make sure all unnecessary electrical appliances are switched off if you return to your hometown or go on holiday," the statement read

The statement also adviced the public to not hang festives decorations on poles, power lines or electrical installations.

The Residual Current Device (RCU) also needs to be tested by pressing the 'T' test button once a month at the very least.

"If RCU functions well, it will repels and electircity will be cut off immediately. RCU that works well can protect the user from electrical shock if there is earth leakage current.

"If RCU is not functioning or is damaged, seek the services of an electrical contractor registered with ST to replace the RCU or for any electrical inspection or wiring work at home," he explained.

Meanwhile for gas safety, ST recommends to always check the gas stove to ensure it is in good condition without emitting any smell or gas leakage.

The public is also adviced to use gas stove equipment that is approved and has the ST-SIRIM safety label, in addition to making sure that the gas stove equipment is in good condition and safe.

"Make sure the gas cylinder valve is closed when you return to your hometown or leave the house, do not leave a hot pan/pot on the gas cylinder and make sure the gas cylinder is vertical when cooking.

"Get the services of a gas contractor registered with ST for gas piping repair work at home," the statement read.
