Najib arrives at Palace of Justice for the hearing of his review bid to quash SRC case
PUTRAJAYA - Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak arrives at the Palace of Justice, here, at 8.50am, today.
The former Pekan MP was present for the hearing of his application to review the Federal Court's decision which upheld his conviction and jail 12-year jail sentence and RM210 million fine over the misapprpriation of RM42 million of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.
A group of Najib's supporters have gathered at the vicinity of the Palace of Justice since 7.40am to show support to him.
Security personnel have tightened the control at the areas inside and outside of the court as precautionary measures.
On Oct 21, last year, it was reported that the court had set Jan 19, 20 and 26 to hear Najib's application to review the Federal Court's decision over his conviction and sentence in the case.
Najib, 70, is currently serving his 12-year jail sentence at the Kajang Prison after he failed in his final appeal against his conviction at the Federal Court on Aug 23, the same year.
On Sept 6, last year, Najib through law firm Messrs Shafee & Co filed an application for the Federal Court's Aug 23, 2022 decision to be reviewed.
He is seeking for the court to review the Federal Court's decision rejecting his application to adduce evidences related to the trial judge, Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali.
On July 28, 2020, Nazlan found Najib guilty on seven charges, three of which was for criminal breach of trust (CBT), three for money laundering and a charge of abuse of power.
Nazlan who was now a Court of Appeal judge had sentenced Najib to 12 years jail and RM210 million fine and the decision was maintained by the Court of Appeal on Dec 8, 2021.
The Umno leader is now seeking for his appeal to be reviewed by a new Federal Court panel comprising at least seven judges.
He is also seeking for a stay of execution of his jail sentence pending the disposal of his review application.
The prosecution in an affidavit in reply through deputy public prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul stated that the review application has no merit and an abuse of the court's process.
