SHAH ALAM - Muda has slammed Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for stating former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was a victim of "unfair prosecution", stating the statement will make people less likely to trust the court system.

Muda secretary general Amir Abd Hadi said the comment could make cause people to perceive the unity government negatively.

Amir was referring to Zahid 2022 Umno General Assembly speech that Najib was one of the main reasons why support for Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) grew after the coalition lost the 2018 elections.

Amir further said that Zahid's comments about political persecution and selective prosecution made it sound like the five Federal Court justices were wrong when they all agreed to uphold Najib's corruption conviction and sentence in the SRC International case.

Najib was sent to jail to begin serving a 12-year sentence, after the top court rejected his appeal on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

He was convicted in July 2020, but had been out on bail during the appeal.

The court also denied Najib's request to delay his sentence.

Before going to jail, he campaigned for BN in the state elections in Melaka in November 2021 and Johor in March 2022.
