Honour your promise, field more women - Wanita Umno
NURUL ATIKAH SARJI , ANISA AZNAN , HAJAR UMIRA MD ZAKIKUALA LUMPUR - Wanita Umno hopes that the party's top leadership will fulfill its promises of fielding at the very least 30 per cent women candidates in the upcoming state election.
Its chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said the party had quality candidates which would be able to aid the party to win the state elections.
"We hope the party leadership will keep it's promise of fielding a minimum of 30 per cent women candidates or even more.
"There are many educated women candidates with Diplomas, Master degrees, as well as PhD (philosophy doctorates)", she said during her winding up speech at the Wanita Umno Debate, here today.
She added that Wanita had fought relentlessly to be represented in the party election.
"From the days the wing was being headed by Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz to Tan Sri Zaharah Sulaiman and when the movement was under the leadership of Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Wanita Umno has never given up on demanding that the party field at least 30 per cent women candidates in any election.
"Until today this has yet to come true, we hope it will become a reality," she said.
Noraini who is also the Parit Sulong member of parliament said the Wanita wing was waiting patiently for the day when this dream will finally become a reality.
"However, our patience has its limit," she cautioned. It has been reported that although the percentage of women's representation in the Dewan Rakyat decreased from 14.9 percent in 2021 to 13.5 percent in 2022, there was an increase in the number of female candidates with 103 contesting parliamentary seats.
