Umno no longer dominates the Malays, says Pas man
SHAH ALAM - A Pas man says Umno no longer dominates the Malays as more brace Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Pas Youth Information Director Nazrul Nazir said this could be seen in the 15th general election (GE15).
"If before, Pas won less than 20 seats with 26 being the highest in 1999 but in GE15, we gained 43 seats," he said.
The Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition made up of Pas and Bersatu won 74 seats in total.
"It means the support has been shifted to PN," he said during the 378th Wacana Sinar titled 'Parti Melayu hilang taring' or lossely translated to A weakening power grab withn a Malay party.
Also present were Puteri Umno exco Fadwah Anuwar and political analyst Iswardy Morni at the Karangkraf Complex, here.
Nazrul said that the shift began in 2020 after Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was appointed as the prime minister.
He said unhappiness during the Pakatan Harapan (PH) era in 2018 further contributed to the switch. "They felt uncomfortable with the PH government," he added.
Another reason for the shift in support was the level of mistrust towards Umno due to coruption and kleptocracy.
He said PN did not win because of race but "because PN and Pas was seen more serious in carrying out the Malay and Islam agenda and clean."
