Two Perhilitan teams tracking killer elephant
LIPIS - An elephant said to have trampled an Orang Asli teenager to death on Monday has been identified and is being tracked by two teams from the Pahang Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), its director Rozidan Md Yasin said today.
He said the two teams comprising 11 personnel are being assisted by another five officers as safety measures.
"The elephant has been identified and is believed to be from Hutan Simpan Ulu Jelai here," he said in a statement today.
In Monday's incident, Andy Yok Manin, 15, died after being trampled by the wild elephant while visiting a durian orchard with his family.
Lipis District police chief Superintendent Azli Mohd Noor said based on information from the public, the elephant attack is believed to have started from Kampung Regang before the animal fled towards the Kampung Tual durian orchard after being chased away by villagers.
"The elephant was said to have entered the durian orchard where the victim was before the attack happen," said Azli.
Before this, an Orang Asli woman was trampled to death by an elephant at Kampung Simoi Baru Pos Betau in Kuala Lipis on Dec 6.
In that incident which happened around 4am, the victim Wak Angkat Yok Tong, 39, was found dead at the scene.
