KUANTAN - A higher education institution (IPT) faced losses of RM54,150 to individuals posing as a police and Communications and Digital Ministry officer last Dec.

Following that, the 21-year-old victim made a police report.

Pahang Police Chief Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said the woman told she had received a call from a 'police officer' on Dec 31 and that call was later connected to a so-called communication ministry officer.

"He had apparently told her that she was illegal gambling, drug smuggling and money laundering.

"Worried of facing legal charges, the victim made the payment as instructed to solve the case.

"The victim made 12 payment transactions through three different accounts," he added.

Ramli said after the payments were made, the victim realised she was scammed and lost RM54,150.

"The public is advised not to trust any dubious calls.Thoroughly check with the police or government agencies involved to avoid becoming a victim of a scam," he said.

The public should be informed that police and authorities would not perform any investigations through the phone, he added.
