KOTA KINABALU - Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin has announced his resignation as Sabah Football Association (Safa) president from immediate effect.

He said the resignation was made out of his own free will to focus on his political career.

He further said the resignation letter will be sent to the Safa secretary general soon.

Bung expressed disappointment with the state football's performance but is happy with the performance under his leadership.

"I am still happy because I managed to bring some change to the Safa administration and some of the successes of the Sabah FC team even though it is still at a level that is not yet satisfactory.

He said it requires support from all parties, especilly the state leadership.

"It is my hope and all the fans who have praised the Sabah football team to continue to support my successor," said the Kinabatangan MP.

In Dec 2020, the Safa supreme council members unanimously agreed to appoint Bung Moktar as acting Safa President and later became the president six months later.

Bung Moktar who is also the Chairman of the Sabah Umno is embroiled in allegations of trying to overthrow the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)-Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

Two days ago, he announced Sabah BN were withdrawing support for Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as the Sabah Chief Minister, causing political instability in the state.
