SHAH ALAM - Selangor police arrested 1,059 individuals involved in a prostitution racket since January.

Selangor Police Chief Datuk Arjunaidi Mohamed said the arrest was from 279 raids, recording 41 men and 1,018 women from various nationalities, including locals.

"The men were workers, agents or runners while the women were guest relations officers (GRO), prostitutes and masseuse.

"Police believe the activities were often carried out individually in hotels and were constantly on the move to complicate any detection. They used social media such as WeChat and MiChat to find customers.

"The immoral activities in hotels were detected when women booked in certain period in addition to their movement being managed by the syndicates," he told Sinar.

Arjunaidi said the payment depended on the status of the women.

He said police believe that hotel owners knew of the immoral act but 'allowed' due to profits.

"We are seriously looking into such activities. We remind premise owners to not collude in such illegal activities," he said.

Arjunaidi said the activities carried out by foreign women on tourists visa were also guised as massage parlors and reflexology centres.

He said action can be taken under Section 372 and 373 of the Penal code, including under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
