Short but sweet and memorable: Rozaid Rahman retires as Sinar Group Editor-in-Chief
SHAH ALAM - They say all good things must come to an end, and sadly today, Sinar Karangkraf’s Group Editor-in-Chief Rozaid Rahman will be stepping down and enter the retirement realm.
During the farewell ceremony yesterday he said throughout his 40-year career as a newsman, Sinar Karangkraf was the first place where he felt an “absolute satisfaction” when it comes to his work.
He also expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Sinar Harian's editor-in-chief for almost two years.
“From my batch - where we first started as journalists in 1984s, I am the last one among us to become editor-in-chief.
“Sinar Harian is the one that gave me the opportunity to be an editor-in-chief, I am grateful. Thank you to Datuk Hussamuddin Yaacub (Karangraf Group founder) and Farah Husamuddin (Sinar Karangkraf chief executive officer) for putting the trust in me to lead Sinar,” he said during his speech.
Rozaid further highlighted the trust he was given launch Sinar Daily, the group’s first ever English medium platform, from scratch.
“We started Sinar Daily from zero and the process was not easy, especially in finding the right people.
“Alhamdulillah, this Sunday, Sinar Daily turns one years old,” he said.
He also spoke of how he enjoyed Sinar’s working culture where everyone was calling each other “brothers and sisters” and acknowledge his fierce leadership style.
“I think all my staff understand why sometimes I raise my voice. In my style, I will scold only at that time only but tomorrow I will not bring it up again.
“Every day, these things happen that eventually become part of our culture, I criticise for good and not because of hate or dislike.
“I hope we continue to produce great journalists, recognised nationally and internationally after this.
"Working here is truly like your working with your family, you are part of the family,” he added.
Rozaid noted that his duty at Sinar Karangkraf had to be cut short due health concerns, where he was recently underwent surgery for slip disc.
“I was on MC for a month and not allowed to use the computer or work for another but as newsman, it’s only natural to write and edit stories and this has affected somewhat my recovery thus why I have to make this difficult decision (of retiring),” he said.
Despite his short stint, he was happy to have visited the Sinar’s bureaus in Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Kedah and Penang.
Rozaid, 58, was appointed as editor-in-chief - responsible for planning and managing Sinar Harian’s print and digital content, on Jan 4, 2021.
He previously an executive editor at The Star, where he was in-charge of building up mStar Online.
He started his career at Utusan Malaysia as a cadet reporter in April 1983 before being promoted to chief reporter of the Utusan Group in 1992 and news editor two years later.
