MELAKA – Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali has denied reports that he will step down as chief minister next year.

This was in light of recent media reports that stated that Sulaiman would be stepping down early next month.

"This is not true," he said in response to the allegation.

Sulaiman also added that this wasn't the first time such allegation has surfaced.

"This was the second time. "The last time I heard of this was in May," he added.

On Monday, it was reported that Sulaiman would step down on Jan 3 next year, to make way for Melaka Umno Chief Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh as chief minister.

The report claimed that the decision was consented to by Umno leadership. Along with Sulaiman, three other state exco members under him, including Rembia assemblyman Muhammad Jailani Khamis, were reported to be stepping down from their positions.

Sulaiman was appointed as chief minister following the Sheraton Move in March 2020. Since then, there have been repeated speculations that Sulaiman works under the control of Rauf.

Sulaiman is a Lendu assemblyman sworn in as the 13th Melaka Chief Minister on Nov 21 last year after Barisan Nasional won 21 out of 28 seats in the Melaka state election.
