KUALA SELANGOR - The Bukit Malawati Tourism Centre here has been temporarily closed starting Tuesday for repair works by the local authorities following a landslide in the area.

The landslide that occurred at the tourist centre on Sunday was believed to be caused by a 50-year old tree that fell down due to heavy rain followed by strong winds.

Bukit Melawati state assemblyman Juwairiya Zulkifli said she received information regarding the incident around 7am which was witnessed by a Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) employee who was on duty to perform a monitoring task.

"The incident caused erosion and soil movement. It is also possible that the recent rainy season has caused the soil to become unstable.

“Besides that, the tree is already old and needs to be cut down to avoid this kind of incident happening in the future,” she said in a statement after receiving a report on the incident.

In this regard, Juwairiya said fire and rescue personnel, Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) and the Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS) “skuad pantas” (quick squad) were actively cleaning up the area.

Following the incident, she said the centre was temporarily closed for the purpose of cleaning and repair works for the safety of visitors.

"Thank you to all the personnel involved. May all of the people in Kuala Selangor be protected by Allah SWT," she said.
