SANDAKAN - It is estimated that more than 100 houses in the water village collapsed due to waves and strong winds in an incident at Jalan Buli Sim-Sim Kampung Forest, here, on Saturday night.

During the incident at about 10pm, around 500 houses were also threatened due to the high tide phenomenon in the area.

Sandakan fire and rescue station chief Nor Azizi Che Noh said he received an emergency call regarding the incident at 10.14pm.

He said a total of nine personnel were deployed to the scene located five kilometres away from the station.

"According to reports, it is estimated that more than 100 houses have collapsed and it is also estimated that 500 houses are threatened due to the high tide phenomenon.

"Monitoring activities are still being carried out and information will be updated from time to time," he said in a statement on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Sandakan Secretariat for the District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) reported that the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sungai Anib 2 has been opened to house all the affected victims in Kampung Forest.

A total of 162 victims from 29 households in Kampung Forest have been identified as affected by the storm and transferred to the relevant PPS.
