Two senior citizens died after ATV crashes into ditch

PONTIAN - Two senior citizens died after the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) they were riding crashed into a ditch at Jalan Kampung Seri Gambut, here, on Thursday.

Pekan Nanas Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Operations Commander Senior Fire Officer II (PBK II) Hairon Nizam Zainal said the department received an emergency call on the incident at 7.06pm.

He said six personnel and one Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) truck were deployed to the scene.

"As they arrived at the scene, the personnel ascertained there was an accident which involved the ATV which crashed into a nearby ditch.

"There were two victims comprised of the ATV rider and passenger who were unconscious and believed to have drowned.

"The team acted quickly to extricate the victims (from the ditch) and administered first aid however, both victims were not responding," he said in a statement on Thursday.

Hairon said both victims were in their 60s and were confirmed dead by the Health Ministry officer at the scene.

The victims were handed over to the police before they were brought to the Pontian Hospital for autopsies.
