SHAH ALAM - The North South Expressway (PLUS) is expected to be swamped with 2 million vehicles daily during Christmas and year-end holidays from Dec 23 to Jan 2.

PLUS Chief Operating Officer Datuk Zakaria Ahmad Zabidi said more than 1.8 million vehicles were recorded consistently following the start of the school holidays.

"Since entering the endemic phase, PLUS has recorded a high traffic of 1.8 million vehicles per day as compared to 1.6 million vehicles per day in 2019, which was before the Covid-19 pandemic," he said in a statement.

Based on customer travel pattern and traffic data during last year's festive and end-of-year holidays, he said they expect about 2 million vehicles to pass through the highway every day.

He advised highway users to follow Travel Time Advisory (TTA) schedule.

He also advised users to be prepared to travel longer due to the traffic surge.

The TTA schedule is availble on PLUS website at www.plus.com.my or its social media channels.

Zakaria added those travelling from the Klang Valley to the northern states of Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak and Johor (on 23 December 2022 to 2 January 2023) are advised to enter the highway before 10am.

"For those heading to a closer location or to other states, they are advised to enter the highway between 12 noon and 4pm," he said.

He said PLUS has also issued a work stop order and no lane closures from Dec 23 to 26, and between Dec 30 2022 to Jan 1 2023 to avoid congestion on the highway unless due to emergency.

He advised users to be physically and mentally prepared for long hours and to be more cautious while driving in the rainy season.

”Make sure your vehicle is in good condition, get enough rest, and prepare essentials such as water, baby formula, medicine for the elderly and snacks in the vehicle.

"They are encouraged to rest at the rest and relax area (R&R) or a side stop from time to time before resuming their journey," he said.

He further asked motorists to ensure that their Touch 'n Go card or e-wallet has sufficient balance to avoid any inconvenience.
