SHAH ALAM - The Batang Kali landslide tragedy could be due to irresponsible economic and exploration activities, says Parti Rakyat Malaysia's (PRM) Secretary-General Koh Swe Yong.

Koh further said recent incidents of floods and landslides are frequently occuring, resulting in deaths or loss of property.

"This shows authorities need to beef up inspection," he said in a statement on Monday.

Koh said to avoid such incidence, the authorities need to implement a better development plan and comply with rules.

He said that the effects of climate change on the environment also need to be addressed so that similar incidents do not continue to occur in the country.

The Friday's landslide at Jalan Genting-Batang Kali has claimed 24 lives with nine more victims yet to be found.

The search and rescue (SAR) operation has continued efforts to find the victims.
