Man braves floodwater to bring grandmother's body to hospital
NORHASPIDA YATIBESUT - The body of an elderly woman who was caught in the flood in Kampung Gaung, Jerteh, was safely brought to Besut Hospital at about 10am on Monday.
His grandson, Nik Mohd Faiz Mohd Khalil, 30, said the body of his grandmother, Che Gayah Mohamad, 82, was taken to the hospital by boat and was expected to be buried at Kampung Gaung cemetery this evening.
"(My) late grandmother died of old age at home around 8pm on Sunday.
“Due to the flood, my family planned to bury her the next day.
"However, the water level rose sharply until it reached one metre around this house starting at 3am this morning, limiting movement for funeral matters.
"Fortunately, there was a boat that provides a free delivery service for bodies and my grandmother's body was safely sent to the hospital to undergo several processes before being buried," he said when contacted here on Monday.
Nik Mohd Faiz said the route near the house started to be flooded since 10pm on Sunday.
However, he said, about 30 family members who lived nearby in Kampung Gaung managed to gather at his grandmother's house on Sunday evening.
"Currently, the other 30 family members are still stuck at the house inundated by flood because only myself with the body and three other people managed to get out to transport the body to the hospital.
"Other family members are still stranded. I hope aid arrives soon and they can all move to a safe location because the water is rising," he said.
