Malaysian shares distress moments leaving flooded Hatyai

SHAH ALAM - A Malaysian shares a nerve wracking moment which he had to go through when he had to leave Hatyai, Thailand immediately on Sunday after floods began to hit the city.

Sharing his experience on Twitter, a user with the name @cairhman_GLC said he rushed to leave the city, after he was made known of the warning, to avoid being trapped in the region.

"I hardly had time to leave Hatyai earlier. Many bridges were closed to cars. I had to wade through the flood to access another bridge nearby.

"Alhamdulillah I drove an Alza. I imagine that Hatyai will soon be inaccessible. It's very scary what I went through just now," he recounted.

Thai media reported that heavy rain continued for two days causing many roads connecting districts in Songkhla Province, Thailand including Hat Yai -- a popular tourist destination among Malaysians -- to be inundated.

The old road connecting Muang and Hat Yai districts were also reported to have been closed by authorities.

In addition, many parts of the road, including in Ban Khuan Hin and Ban Bangkhan, were flooded and impassable for small vehicles.

According to the report, people traveling between the two districts were advised to avoid the old road and take the newer highway, called Jalan Lopburi Ramet.

In Rattaphum district, the road from the district town to Khuha junction was also flooded.

Drivers traveling from Satun to Rattaphum were advised to use the old Phetkasem highway.
