PUTRAJAYA - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasised that the cooperation agreement is for good governance as well as stabilising the economy.

He said the agreement that has been signed by all coalition parties in the Unity Government was not intended to defend positions or provide rewards.

"This is a very interesting and meaningful development in the political history of the country where we reached understanding and consensus with a clear direction.

"This cannot be achieved without the cooperation of the party leaders from not only the peninsula but also Sabah and Sarawak.

"With the acknowledgment that is more based on the commitment to principles and policies, I would like to clarify that, in the agreed memorandum, this is not a matter of position or reward.

"But the principles and policies that are stated are good governance, and it's also a question of driving a fresh and convincing economic organisation," he said.

He said this at a press conference after the Inter-Coalition Agreement Signing Ceremony under the Unity Government, at Perdana Putra building, here on Friday.

He hoped that the support given by the coalition party would continue until the end of this term.

Anwar said he was moved by the support and commitment given by all the party.

"We are emphasising governance issues because it is important and we also need to go back to the policy of cleaning up the government machinery to avoid any kind of scandal like what had happened in the past.

"We acknowledged some of these statements, and we want to move forward. But the center of our observation is the generation of economic growth that should be paid attention to, not only in the peninsula but also together with Sabah and Sarawak," he added.

Further, Anwar assured the Sabah People's Coalition (GRS) chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, and the Sarawak Coalition (GPS) chairman, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, to continue to prioritise the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and financial matters in Sabah and Sarawak.

"On the authority to approve projects and the recognition of Sabah and Sarawak workers, Finance Ministry has completed the report and submitted it to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof for his review, in which he will revert back to me before it is taken to Cabinet for discussion,"he added.
