Landslide: ‘I dug the ground with my hands, tried to save other victims’
HULU SELANGOR – A family gathering at a campsite turns into a tragedy when the location was hit by a landslide while they were sleeping early Friday morning.
One of the victims who only wanted to be known as Chong said that at the time of the incident, his whole family was sleeping before they heard a loud bang that sounded like thunder.
"We camped for three days and two nights and we were supposed to return to Melaka today.
“There are 15 of us including relatives and friends camping here.
"During the landslide, I was sleeping but woke up when I heard a loud sound like thunder
“After the incident, I tried to save the buried victims, I dug the ground with my hands to save two people from another campsite," he said when met at the Ulu Yam Police Station here today.
Meanwhile, another survivor who wanted to be known as Teh, 22, said she was grateful to have survived but was saddened by the loss of one of her family members in the incident around 2am.
"Before the incident, it was drizzling and the weather had been that way for several days.
"Last night, I was barely sleeping when I head the sound of stones rolling before our tent was raised up to the point that our feet were thrown off the ground,” she said.
According to the police, about 100 people are believed trapped in the incident.
Currently, the search and rescue operation is carried out with the assistance of the K9 tracker dog unit, the Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) from the Sentosa, Ampang, Pandan, Kota Anggerik, Kajang dan Andalas fire and rescue stations and the Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team (STORM).
