RM12 million approved for flood mitigation projects in Rantau Panjang: DPM Zahid

RANTAU PANJANG - The federal government has approved an immediate allocation of RM12 million to provide six units of high-powered portable pumps to resolve the problem of stagnant floodwaters in Pasir Mas.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the pumps will be placed in six locations that have been identified as flood prone areas.

The pumps, he said, was to avoid occurences of flood when water overflows from rivers such as Sungai Golok.

"A total of RM2.1 billion was allocated for the state government through the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) for flood mitigation projects, some of which had been or is being implemented," he said at a press conference after a visit to the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Gual Tok Deh temporary evacuation centre (PPS), here on Thursday.

Also present were Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong.

Zahid who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said continous long term flood mitigation efforts were needed for the safety of the people.

Previously, Sinar had reported reported that several villages along Sungai Golok were affected by floods. It took three weeks for the flood water to recede.

It was learned that due poorly implemented flood mitigation measures, the area continues to hit by flood.
