SHAH ALAM - Malaysian Association for Education President Datuk Satinah Syed Saleh described Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek as a breath of fresh air despite her lack of experience in the education sector.

Satinah said one is not required to be an educationist or to have extensive experience in the field of education to be the education minister.

“My view is a little bit different to some people, in the sense that, for me, you do not have to be an educationist or have a lot of experience in education, not necessarily,” she said.

Satinah said that Fadhlina's statement drew her attention when she was appointed as education minister on Dec 2.

In her statement, Fadhlina acknowledged that she is young and inexperienced and she is willing to engage with those with more expertise.

“What I like about what she said was that she is very open, she said she is willing to discuss and give space for people to give their opinion, make engagement and communicate with stakeholders or with interested communities,” Satinah said.

“That is important to me because even if we have a minister who is an educator or is familiar with the education sector, but if their mindset is not open,or they feel like they are smarter than other people, we will face difficulties.

Satinahn added as long as Fadhlina remains humble during her time in office as the education minister, she will have no issues within the ministry.

“If Fadhlina is open like this, she has an open mind and she does not consider herself as someone who knows everything, then she would be able to carry out her responsibilities easily."
