PUTRAJAYA - Law and Institutional Reform Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said starts her first step in the effort to separate the powers between the Attorney-General and the public prosecutor.

Through a post on her Facebook page, Azalina said a meeting was held with Attorney General's Department (AGC) on Tuesday, which was led by Solicitor General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh Tuesday to discuss the matter.

"Following this discussion, the Attorney-General’s Chamber will prepare a paper on the department's restructuring plan.

"I hope it will lead to something," she said.

Previously, the government studied the implications of the proposed separation of powers between the Attorney-General and the public prosecutor, although many other countries, including Commonwealth countries, had practiced this.

The then Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had said that a total of 19 existing laws, including the Federal Constitution, needed to be amended for that purpose.
