PUTRAJAYA - Sparks during renovation works which accidentally hit a pile of papers is believed to have been the cause of a fire that broke out at the dumpsite at the ground floor of the Finance Ministry, here, today.

Putrajaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner A Asmadi Abdul Aziz said he received a distress call from MERS999 at 2.36pm.

He said an electrical maintenance staff noticed that the fire broke out at the ground floor of the ministry.

"At the same time, maintenance workers had tried to put out the fire but to no avail due to the thick smoke.

"The electrical maintenance employee then informed a police personnel on duty for further action," he told Sinar Harian on Tuesday.

He said initial investigations by the fire and rescue department found that the incident was believed to be caused by the sparks from renovation works that hit pile of papers at the dumpsite.

"However, the actual cause of the fire is still under investigation.

"The fire was completely put out by the firemen at 4.30pm," he said.
