Nga Kor Ming on his first day as Local Government Minister
The newly-minted minister said the decision will save money which could be channelled to the poor.
“From today, my office will practice ‘no gift policy’ in any events or programmes.
“This is to reduce the burden of organisers. Instead of giving gifts, we can save and offer more to the poor.
“This is more meaningful,” he said at a press conference.
Further, Nga who welcomed Cabinet's decision to take a 20 per cent pay cut, said the move was timely to show the government stands in solidarity for the people during tough times.
"I support the salary cut for all the ministers. The 20 percent pay cut is not much but its a strong message to everyone that as a unity government, we care for the people," he said.
Nga, the first-time minister was Perak's state housing and local government exco in 2008 and also the longest-serving state assemblyman in Perak. He served for six for terms.
Earlier, the former deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker officially clocked in at 8.50am at the ministry's headquarters.
