SHAH ALAM – Former Kempas assemblyman Datuk Tengku Putra Haron Aminurrashid Tengku Hamid indicated that Umno's party elections could be held soon after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced his Cabinet.

Speaking as a panelist on a Sinar Live programme entitled 'Anwar 10th PM: New Hope for Malaysians' on Friday, Tengku Putra Haron said as such, this would also mean a decision on the fate of those facing charges in court, would be made by Umno members through the elections.

"For those in the so-called 'court cluster', there will be a decision. We will do our best, but wait for this to happen first," he said.

In a press statement issued by Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi following a supreme council meeting late Wednesday night, it was stated alongside the party's agreement to adhere to the royal decree for the formation of a unity government, that the Umno General Assembly has been set for Dec 19.

However, Tengku Putra Haron seemed adamant that party elections could be held earlier.

“The prime minister will announce the Cabinet, we will see after that,” he said.

The Sinar Live programme was hosted by Hazwan Mokhtar and featured political analyst Dr Sharifah Shahirah Syed Sheikh, Emir Research President Datuk Dr Rais Hussin Mohamed Ariff and Seberang Jaya Assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin as panelists alongside Tengku Putra Haron.

On Thursday Anwar stated that no decision had been made on the composition of the cabinet, adding that as a unity government he required the views and consensus of other parties involved.

Tengku Putra Haron said the government should not be pressured to announce a Cabinet hastily.
