KUCHING - A total of 247 dilapidated schools identified in Sarawak will be involved in various school restoration projects by the state and federal governments.

Sarawak Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said 62 of the projects had been completed while 177 more are in various stages of planning and construction.

"After the Covid-19 pandemic, the restoration of such schools have picked up and we will be completing the projects as soon as possible,” he said when replying to a question by Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman (GPS-Tupong) at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

Apart from that, Dr Annuar said his ministry was also implementing professional development programmes for educators, as well as empowering school leadership and management in line with the regulations under the Malaysian Education Quality Standard.

"To improve the command of English as the second official language in Sarawak, the ministry also organised a special Sarawak English Language Education Symposium for English language teachers," he said.

Dr Annuar said his ministry also provides special courses for school teachers in Sarawak to further improve their competence in teaching Science, Mathematics and English.

"Teachers are also supplied with additional materials to help them especially in teaching science and mathematics as well as National Geographic Learning, besides supplying Raspberry Pi (mini-computers) for primary schools," he said.

He added that Yayasan Sarawak also provides financial assistance for poor students to enable them to continue their schooling. - BERNAMA
