SHAH ALAM - Shahril Hamdan, now ex-Umno information chief urges Barisan Nasional (BN) to focus on rebuilding the party, says better for BN to remain in opposition.

Shahril urged BN to focus on its reform agenda and reflected on this huge defeat so that they might come back from it.

He explained that although it might be less awkward for the other parties, Barisan Nasional (BN) should have class and do it their way.

“There may be no one clear winner but it is clear we lost.

“It would be hard to rationalise to the people how a political party that lost can be in the government while another that held 70-80 seats still stands at the opposition side,” he said.

In this, he referred to the fact that BN only secured 30 parliamentary seats while Pakatan Harapan (PH) secured 82 seats and Perikatan Nasional (PN) secured 73 seats.

He added it would be a different story if we had an alliance prior to the election, but this was not the case.

“There is no moral standing for us to be involved in the government,” he said.

He also said that if BN was to be a part of any government, that decision could follow them all the way to GE16 and might even ensure their downfall.

Yesterday (Nov 20), Shahril resigned as Umno information chief and was promptly replaced by Umno member Isham Jalil.

After he resigned, Shahril also called for Umno president Zahid Hamidi to take responsibility for the coalition’s loss and resign from his post.
