The new government to be announced today?
SHAH ALAM - Will we have a new government today? More than 24 hours have passed since Malaysia was left in a quandary over who will be left to govern it.
On Sunday the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah 24 had ordered for political parties to form their alliances in order to establish a new government before 2pm tomorrow.
The King had also ordered for the proposal of a Prime Minister candidate who would command the confidence of the majority in the August house.
On another matter, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) had announced their agreement to form a government together with Perikatan Nasional (PN), BN, and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah ( GRS).The matter was announced by GPS chairman & Sarawak premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg following a meeting held with PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in the morning.
Muhyiddin claimed to have the support for him to be appointed as the 10th Prime Minister after the meeting. The Pagoh Member of Parliament (MP) said this was based on the support that he had from GPS, GRS and a few other Dewan Rakyat members to form the government.
However, BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had denied that the coalition had discussed with GPS to form a unity government with PN.
The Bagan Datuk MP stated that there was no discussions held among the coalition and PN at the time. Speculations have been rife that over 20 BN MPs have stated their support for Muhyiddin to lead the country. Internal BN sources said 20 out of 30 MPs have prepared to sign a Sworn Declaration (SD) to support Muhyiddin to be elected as the 10th prime minister and form the new government.
On the other side of the divide, Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was confident that he had the higher number of seats and that he would be able to form the government.
The Tambun MP has not revealed with whom PH's alliances are.
Based on sources, it is understood that Anwar will have a meeting with Zahid at a Kuala Lumpur hotel today. If indeed the meeting happens, the outcome will be of significant importance. The question on everyone's mind today will be which coalition bloc will be forming our government and who will be our 10th Prime Minister, Anwar or Muhyiddin? Malaysia will be watching eagerly today.
