Party leaders must submit coalition, PM candidate by 2pm, Monday - Istana Negara
LILYANA RIZALSHAH ALAM - The Yang Di-Pertuan Agong wants leaders of coalitions and political parties to inform Istana Negara of the agreed coalition to form a government by 2pm on Monday.
Leaders were also asked to submit the name of their respective Prime Minister candidate by then.
In a statement today, the palace said it received the official results for the 15th General Election (GE15) which was held yesterday (Saturday) from the Election Commission (EC) at 1.15pm, today.
The document presented by EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, it said clearly showed that no political parties managed to gain a simple majority for the parliamentary seats to form a government.
"The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, Istana Negara have asked the cooperation of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun to ask heads of political parties and coalitions with many seats to inform the palace on the coalition agreed upon to form a government after GE15.
"The heads of the parties are also asked to inform Istana Negara of the name of a Prime Minister candidate before 2pm, on Monday (Nov 21)," the statement said.
GE15 ended in a hung parliament with no party securing a clear majority to form the new federal government.
Pakatan Harapan (PH) had won 82 seats and Perikatan Nasional (PN), 73 seats, as of 4.30am when the EC declared the results for 219 of the 222 seats in the Dewan Rakyat.
