KUALA LUMPUR - With 73 seats in the bag, Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced tonight that the coalition would undertake immediate negotiations with parties from Sabah and Sarawak to form the government, having secured a majority to do so.

Although the results of six of the 220 seats contested were yet to be announced, Muhyiddin said the PN leadership held a special meeting tonight in which they agreed to commence negotiations on the formation of government and were open to parties willing to join hands with the exception of Pakatan Harapan.

"I'd like to thank the people for their support, especially the young voters who enabled us to achieve success beyond our expectations," said Muhyiddin, who also congratulated PN candidates who won their respective seats and the party machinery who had given full commitment to the cause.

Muhyiddin also described negotiations with Sabah and Sarawak parties as encouraging, but declined to reveal the parties involved, stating that it will be announced in due course.

Muhyiddin also revealed that he had received a letter from Istana Negara that stipulates the conditions required in order to form the government.

"The negotiations with the Sabah and Sarawak parties have been encouraging. In order to preserve stability, we are open to any party which accepts the principles and struggles of PN to form a government that emphatises, is clean and stable," said Muhyiddin, adding that PN also had a sufficient number of seats to form the state government of Perlis.

"If PN is successful in forming the government with friendly parties, our focus will immediately be on fulfilling the pledges under the PN Best campaign which was promised to the people," said Muhyiddin.

"The PN leadership has taken into account certain circumstances and what is important at this juncture is that with PN forming the government we can create a stable political atmosphere. This means we have to take into consideration certain factors in other parties and whether they share the same direction and values," he added.

On the letter from Istana Negara, Muhyiddin said it contained matters that had to be resolved as specified by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

"These matters require immediate action and discussions will be held tomorrow and will be finalised tomorrow evening. We will have to comply with what has been directed by Istana Negara," said Muhyiddin.

Asked whether cooperation with Pakatan Harapan was possible, Muhyiddin said that was not the case.

"PN will not work with PH. Not with PH," he said.
