No discussions yet on postponing election – Ismail Sabri

PETALING JAYA - Caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob says no discussion has been made to postpone the 15th General Election (GE15).

Ismail Sabri said at the moment, only flash floods had occurred recently.

“No discussion yet to postpone the election as it is still (in the phase) of flash floods,” he said when met by reporters during a walkabout at Uptown Kota Damansara, here, yesterday.

Barisan Nasional (BN) Sungai Buloh candidate Khairy Jamaluddin was also present during the walkabout.

Of late, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had issued daily warnings of thunderstorms, heavy winds and strong winds at several areas in the country.

As of yesterday, National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) announced six states, namely Penang, Perak, Selangor, Melaka, Johor and Kelantan had been affected by floods which involved 14 districts.

A total of 2,914 flood victims from 904 families had been placed at 31 temporary flood relief cantres (PPS) in the six states.

In other development, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said that the GE15 should be postponed if the flood situation gets worse.

“It is wrong to hold elections during the time that there are usually floods in Malaysia and nowadays the floods are much worse than before,” he told reporters after his campaign speech in Titiwangsa.

Sepang Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Datuk Seri Rina Harun had also expressed her concerns about the overlap between polling stations for GE15 and flood relief shelters (PPS).

She said from a total of 6,010 PPS, 2,100 or a whooping 35 per cent overlapped between flood relief shelters and polling stations.

Rina also questioned if floods were to happen simultaneously during polling day, would the premises be prioritised as polling station or PPS.
