Khairy said if he won Sungai Buloh seat, he would like to make changes in Umno, BN, and the country.
He admitted that many had told him that they ‘do not like’ a handful of Umno leaders which he did not name.
“I don’t want to stop in Sungai Buloh because contesting here is the biggest challenge in my political career. Winning here is not easy, but if I win, I want to bring us all, not now but maybe in the next five or 10 years to lead the country.
“I want to bring changes to my party (Umno) and want Umno to be seen again as a noble vessel for the Malay community. Now, there are many who meet and inform me, its not that they don’t like Umno, but they don’t like some (individuals) in the party.
“The media should not put me up against president (Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi), but this is the truth and reality. My friends and I want to return Umno to its roots of being a noble Malay party, clean, open to change and helmed by a good leadership and is able to be trusted like in the past,” he said during his speech at the Religious and Community Charity Organisation (Perakam) event at the Rahman Putra Club on Friday.
He stressed that there were many things within Umno that needed to be fixed.
“We say this because it’s true. Let’s not hide the facts anymore, Malays had always (felt) the sentimental value towards Umno. It’s just that Umno has been lost and needs to return to their path and corrected.
“I want to win GE15 to ensure Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob remains as Prime Minister. Afterwards we will clean up Umno as well as bring back the people’s confidence towards the party.
“I am a reformist in Umno and could not close my mouth. That is why I was sent to Sungai Buloh. If there was nobody brave enough to highlight it, it will never change.
“That is why my bet this time was not only for Sungai buloh but for the future of the country, Umno and BN.
“If I win, Insya-allah we will see big changes. Starting from Sungai Buloh all the way to Putrajaya,” he said.
Commenting on the challenges in contesting in Sungai Buloh, the former health minister said for the first time, an Umno representative holding a ministerial position dared to contest in an unsafe area in Selangor.
“All this time, big figures in my party always tried and choose safe areas. Because of it there was no great contest in Selangor. Previously only Tan Sri Noh Omar won. That was only in Tanjong Karang.
“To come closer to cities such as Sungai Buloh, there is nobody brave enough except (former finance minister) Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz at Kuala Selangor.
“Even though there were a few statements by me and the President (which were different), in the end I also chose to fight here,” he explained.
