SHAH ALAM - The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a thunderstorm warning in several areas on the northern, southern, west coast, east coast, Sabah and Sarawak states on Wednesday evening.

In a statement, MetMalaysia said thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds were expected in Kedah (Padang Terap, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu) as well as Perak.

It was also expected to occur in Pahang (Tanah Tinggi Cameron, Lipis, Raub, Bentong, Temerloh and Bera), Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka as well as Johor (Tangkak, Segamat, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Pontian and Kulai).

Meanwhile, in Sarawak, Miri (Telang Usan and Marudi) and Limbang while Sabah in the interior (Sipitang, Kuala Penyu and Beaufort) as well as the West Coast (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran).

The warning issued at 4.45pm was expected to be in effect until 9pm on Wednesday.

According to the agency, an alert was issued when there were signs that indicated a thunderstorm with a rain intensity exceeding 20 mm/hour that was near or expected to occur for more than an hour.

"A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning valid within a period not exceeding six hours for a single issue," the statement said.
