GE15: Kazim Elias pulls out as BN Larut candidate

IPOH - Perak Barisan Nasional (BN) has replaced a new candidate for the Larut Parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election (GE15).

The announcement comes as Datuk Mohd Kazim Elias also known as religious preacher Kazim withdrew his candidacy.

State BN Chairman Datuk Saarani Mohamad announced Mohd Shafiq Fhadly Mahmud as the BN candidate for the Larut seat.

He said Kazim announced the withdrawal about 1am on Wednesday without revealing any reasons.

"I was in the Umno Office yesterday and around 1am I gained information that he wanted to withdraw.

"That's all I know," he said during a press conference after the Perak BN GE15 Candidate Announcement, here, last night.

Saarani said based on the original announcement Kazim had agreed to be the BN candidate for the seat and the letter of candidacy or watikah was prepared to be handed over.

Zahid himself at the BN Parliamentary Candidates Announcement Ceremony in the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL) on Tuesday.

Kazim's selection was made not only due to his popularity as a religious figure but as a influencer in Perak.

Saarani said the new BN Larut Parliament candidate will focus on youths.

The Larut Parliament is now held by the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Secretary General Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

In GE14 Hamzah won the Larut Parliamentary seat under the BN ticket after defeating Pas candidate Abu Husin Mohamad with a majority of 4,486 votes.

He left Umno for Bersatu in 2019.
