SHAH ALAM - The office of Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has refuted a claim by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim accusing the former of labelling the latter a Freemason agent.

In a statement, Hadi’s office stated that these accusations were baseless, insisting that the party will not resort to political slander of such nature.

“We have been called upon to deny this allegation and state on record that the PAS president has never said this,” read the statement issued today.

During a speech yesterday, Anwar belittled Hadi’s gravitas, claiming that the Marang MP’s words should not be taken at face value as he had once called him a Freemason.

Hadi’s controversial linking of Anwar with the fraternal Jewish organisation was first aired by PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil.

According to Fahmi, Hadi had allegedly sent a letter to the late Islamic scholar Yusuf Qardawi, saying that Anwar was a Freemason, only to later on discovered that there was another individual in the group who shared the same name as Anwar.

Fahmi said Hadi had not admitted his mistake and that the head of the Islamic party owed Anwar an apology for the false accusation.
