Langkawi District Civil Defence Force Officer Capt (PA) Ahmad Shahfikri Darus said the PPS was opened at about 8 pm.
"The villagers’ houses began to be inundated around 6 pm. Several other areas in this district, such as Ayer Hangat and Kuah, were also hit by floods but, so far, no PPS has been opened in these areas as the water levels there had receded,” he said in a statement tonight.
Ahmad Shahfikri said they would continue to monitor the water levels of the main rivers from time to time as well as the flood-prone areas.
A check by Bernama tonight found the Melaka River overflowing its banks around Kampung Atas and the Padang Mat Sirat market in the Padang Mat Sirat subdistrict.
Meanwhile, eight houses in Kampung Sungai Bongkok, Mukim Gurun in the Kuala Muda district were also hit by floods at about 5 pm today following more than three hours of a downpour but no PPS was opened as the water had receded. - BERNAMA
