GE15: Najib listed as Pekan Parliament candidate
KUANTAN - Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is among the five candidates listed in Pekan Umno to defend the Parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election (GE15).
Deputy Pekan Umno Chief Datuk Seri Zamri Ramly said the decision was made after taking into account the former leader still had a chance to contest if he was successful in the application to review the Federal Court's decision last August.
He said if the court's decision sided with his side and he was freed before the naming of candidates, he would still be eligible to contest in defending the Parliamentary seat.
"There are no problems for Pekan Umno to list his name (Najib) in the list of candidates for GE15," he said when contacted on Thursday.
Zamri said Pekan Umno had no intention to place Najib's eldest son Datuk Nizar Najib or his daughter Nooryana Najwa in the Parliamentary seat.
He said as Pekan Youth Chief. Nizar was encouraged to contest in the State Legislative Assembly (Dun) seat.
"Nooryana had not been active in politics, maybe it is not the time for her name to be nominated," he said.
The four other candidates listed were not revealed.
Najib is now undergoing his 12-year prison sentence after the Federal Court upheld the conviction of the former prime minister in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case on Aug 23.
The decision had made him the first Prime Minister sent to prison.
