Cough, flu medicine from India not registered in Malaysia

PUTRAJAYA - Four cough syrup and flu medicine released by an Indian pharmaceutical company that was claimed to cause 66 deaths of children after consuming it was not registered in Malaysia.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said it was the results of a review from the National Pharmacy Regulatory Agency (NPRA) towards the database for promethazine oral solution, kofexmalin baby cough syrup, makoff baby cough syrup and magrip N cold syrup.

"The Ministry of Health (MOH) through NPRA would run the continuous survey towards this incident to ensure the quality, safety and effectiveness of medicine in this country is assured," he said in a statement on Friday.

Previously, local news reported the World Health Organisation (WHO) releasing a warning regarding four products after it was related to the deaths of 66 children in Gambia, India.

The United Nations (UN) health agency gave their warnings that the contaminated medicine was distributed overseas in West Aftrica with the 'possibilities of the existence in global exposure'.
